MONTREAL - Ottawa's Mark Stone battled through a wrist injury and set up both of Ottawa's goals Friday night. It still wasn't enough, however, for the Senators to even the series.

Stone got the primary assist on Ottawa's two goals in Game 2 of their first-round playoff series agianst the Canadiens, but Montreal won 3-2 in overtime.

The Senators trail the best-of-seven series 2-0.

"We've been a 'never-say-die' team for the last three months," said Stone, who was instrumental in Ottawa's late push for playoff hockey. "We've had to work and claw our way out of things, and this is no different. We're in a hole, but we're going home and we like how we're playing."

After taking a slash to the right wrist from Montreal's P.K. Subban in Game 1 of the series on Wednesday, Stone's status was questionable going forward. On Thursday, the Senators said Stone suffered a microfracture and ligament damage to the wrist.

But after Ottawa's morning skate on Friday, the 22-year-old told head coach Dave Cameron he was healthy enough to dress for Game 2.

"It was up to me, really," said Stone. "They wanted to see if I had motion. I went out for warmup and felt healthy enough to think that I could help this team. I'm playing through a little bit of pain, but at this time of year a lot of guys are playing through pain."

Stone added one hit and one blocked shot in 18:40 of ice time on Friday. Uncharacteristically, he did not direct a single shot towards Carey Price's net.

"People were questioning him and his toughness," said defenceman Mark Borowiecki. "But he's the most passionate about hockey I know and one of the most intense guys I know. He's not faking it.

"To see him battle and be a warrior in the playoffs, it's good to see."

Late in the first period, with the game scoreless, Stone fed a streaking Clarke MacArthur at the Montreal blue-line. MacArthur blew past Andrei Markov and fired the puck past Price for his first goal of the series.

After the Canadiens scored twice in the second period to take a 2-1 lead, Stone found an unmarked Patrick Wiercioch to Price's left for the game-tying goal with six minutes on the clock.

"He's a character guy for us," MacArthur said about Stone. "He's going to battle through it and do what he has to do and that's all you can ask from a teammate.

"For him to step in there — he's a young guy — it was gritty of him. Hats off to him."

Wiercioch's goal sent the game to overtime, where Montreal's Alex Galchenyuk scored at 3:40 to give the Canadiens the victory.

The series heads to the nation's capital for Game 3 on Sunday and Game 4 on Wednesday.

Notes: The Sens are 16-13 all-time in overtime in the playoffs. … Max Pacioretty and P.K. Subban scored for Montreal in regulation time. … Andrew Hammond stopped 39-of-42 shots in defeat. Price made 29 saves. … Pacioretty was back from injury for the Habs after missing the team's last three games.
