Ghost stories and tasty food highlight weekend fun in Okanagan, Kamloops

Anyone wanting to get out, explore their city and socialize for no charge — or at least very little — has a number of events to choose from this weekend.

Here are a few ideas, and the whole family is welcome to participate. 

Taste of Downtown Penticton is showcasing local businesses in a four-day, all-day event where participating downtown restaurants will offer delicious food specials while local musicians play at multiple locations. It’s a chance to support local venues while exploring Penticton’s culinary scene.

For a chance to win a one-night stay at the Penticton Lakeside Resort and $250 to eat at a downtown restaurant, participants can share their Taste of Downtown experience on Facebook with the tag #tasteofdowntownpen or on Instagram @downtownpenticton.

The event runs from Thursday, Oct. 19, to Sunday, Oct. 22. Go here for a list of participating restaurants.

Fall’s Fabulous Extravaganza in Kelowna is returning and featuring over 55 exhibitors, a bake sale, door prizes and refreshments. It is a great place to find unique Halloween décor and Christmas presents.

Shoppers can find anything from books, makeup to clothing to food and much more.

Admission to the event is free, but donations of non-perishable food, baby items, toiletries and cash will be accepted for the Kelowna Food Bank. 

Located at Rutland Centennial Hall at 215 Shepherd Rd., the extravaganza runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 21. Go here to see a list of exhibitors.

Ghost Tours of Vernon are back on for another year where everyone is welcome to take a walking tour through the Vernon streets and up into the historic East Hill and back while listening to paranormal stories by host Mr. Harrison Robert Coe.

The outdoor storytelling tour lasts for roughly 90 minutes and will go ahead regardless of weather conditions. The cost is $10 cash and no reservations are necessary.

The walk starts at the Vernon Museum at 3009 32nd Avenue at 7 p.m. The tours have been running since Oct. 16, with Saturday, Oct. 21, the last tour for the season.

Everyone is invited to meet at Kamloops's Riverside Park for a Know Your Neighbour Day Walk to embrace diversity, promote unity, build friendships and strengthen the community.

According to the event poster, the walk is to promote humanity, sharing and mutual respect, and to combat racism, discrimination and hatred in the community.

It’s a chance to for residents to connect with one another, discuss social political topics and a general reminder to be good neighbours.

Know Your Neighbour Day Walk begins at Riverside Park Pier at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 21.
