KAMLOOPS - The Kamloops Blazers have announced that 20-year-old Collin Shirley has been named Captain of the 2016-17 Kamloops Blazers.

“I’m thrilled, excited and honoured to be the captain of the Blazers,” Shirley said. “I look forward to the challenges ahead and can’t wait to get the season started.”

Shirley was acquired by the Blazers in October 2013 from the Kootenay Ice. He has played a total of 274 WHL games, including 203 with the Kamloops Blazers, over the past four seasons.

The Saskatoon, SK native has been an effective player with the Blazers scoring 75 goals and adding 70 assists for 145 points. He led the Blazers in scoring during the 2015-16 season with 79 points and was an assistant captain.

“Collin has matured as a player and person over the past few years with our hockey club,” Head Coach, Don Hay said. “We think Collin will be an effective leader for us both on and off the ice.”

Shirley takes over the captaincy from graduated forward Matt Needham. Needham was the Blazers captain for the past three seasons. The 21-year-old will play Canadian Interuniversity hockey this season with the St. Francis Xavier X-Men in Antigonish, Nova Scotia.
