The house on Chateau Street where a 15-year-old boy was shot Sunday has several self contained suites in it.

KAMLOOPS - A young man is expected to recover from what are being called 'very minor' injuries after taking a shotgun pellet in the leg Sunday night, but little information is available over the how and why of the event.

The single shot came from the upstairs neighbour and hit the 15-year-old resident who was in the basement at the time, but the call for help didn't go to police, it went to B.C. Ambulance. When they got to the North Shore around 10 p.m. and saw what happened, they called police to the house in the 1100 block of Chateau Street. 

Staff Sgt. Fran Bethell says when police arrived, they tried speaking to several people in the home but no one explained why a firearm was discharged nor who is responsible. Cpl. Cheryl Bush says that some of the residents had left the property before police arrived and others were not cooperating with officers, which resulted in it taking longer for police to piece together what happened.

Some of the residents associated with the house are known to police but police don't believe the shooting was intentional or the victim targeted. The home is partitioned into self-contained units according to RCMP and one neighbour says at least 10 people live in the rental home, including some young kids.

Brian Kirychuk lives across the street and Sunday night one officer told him to stay clear of any windows because a shotgun had been fired. He says several police vehicles were parked in front of the home and two were in the back. Officers crouched behind vehicles with guns drawn as they assessed the situation, unknown if the shooter was still in the house and armed at the time. Both ends of Chateau Street were also blocked to traffic as police tried to determine what had happened and police tape remained around the front of the house this morning as officers continued to investigate, he says.

While Kirychuk has seen police and bylaw officers at the home in the past he says the residents have never bothered him, though he does wish the property would be cleaned up.

Bush says there is nothing to link this shooting with a similar incident on Brunner Avenue in June other than the fact that a firearm was in a residence and discharged through the floor.

A search warrant has been executed and the investigation continues. It is not yet known if there will be any charges in relation to the shooting.
