KAMLOOPS – KGHM Ajax has poached top leadership at another Kamloops institution to shore up its public relations team.

The Kamloops Daily News confirmed that managing editor Robert Koopmans has resigned and left the newsroom to accept a position with Ajax. According to the Daily News he offered leave immediately on Friday because of the "ethical conflict."

Koopmans, a career newsman, has been with the local newspaper for more than 21 years but has worked in the industry since 1987.

He isn't the only one to leave a career in another field for a public relations job with a mine that hasn't been approved yet. In January, former RCMP Supt. Yves Lacasse retired from the force after 27 years to join KGHM Ajax as the external affairs manager.

KGHM currently lists nine specific jobs it is hiring for, as well as a general application listing, for the Ajax mine. Among the managers and metallurgists is a posting for a senior communications strategist to work alongside the external affairs team.
