VANCOUVER - Three people including a Vancouver police officer have been injured in an exchange of gunfire that began outside a downtown Starbucks.

Police responded to reports of shots fired at about 11 a.m. Tuesday and found a man had been shot and seriously wounded outside the coffee shop.

Paramedics rushed him to hospital as police followed a man believed to be responsible for the mayhem.

Sgt. Randy Fincham said the alleged suspect and an officer exchanged gunfire several blocks away near Science World and that both of them were injured.

"The alleged shooter remains in hospital in serious condition," Fincham said. "The unidentified officer is being treated in hospital for minor injuries."

It was not immediately clear how the officer was injured, and police said further information would be provided later.

Fincham said the man shot outside the coffee shop is in serious condition in hospital.

It's the second time this week that gunfire has erupted on the streets of Vancouver.

A 28-year-old woman was shot outside a gas station on Sunday night while she and her male companion stood outside their vehicle.

The woman remains in hospital in stable condition and the man, who sustained minor injuries, fled the scene and was arrested on an outstanding warrant.

Police described that shooting as a targeted hit.

Note to readers: This is a corrected story. A previous version incorrectly reported that the first person shot was a woman.
