GPH Mechanical: Helping To Build South Okanagan Communities

When it comes to air conditioning and cooling installation, hot days mean busy days. For one company based in Summerland, this summer's heat has also coincided with its busiest time ever.

GPH Mechanical is working on one of its most challenging projects to date, an impressive new subdivision development in Summerland, BC. An amalgamation of properties known as the Oasis project, this stunning lakeside project has been a perfect way for GPH Mechanical to showcase its talent.

Being a well-respected Southern Okanagan heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) company, GPH Mechanical is clearly very good at its trade. According to company Owner Gord Hayman, the part of GPH Mechanical that the Oasis project has really highlighted is the team's ability to find solutions in challenging situations.

The Oasis Project: Putting a Spotlight on Teamwork and Communication

The Oasis project will consist of several structures, primarily a pair of six-storey residential-and-commercial mixed tenant buildings on Okanagan Lake 30 minutes south of Kelowna. Due to extenuating circumstances, GPH Mechanical was brought on board when Phase One of the project was already well underway. According to Gord, that is a less-than-desirable situation for any trade, most of all HVAC. Stepping in to tackle an almost entirely constructed building means a new set of challenges; luckily, that is where GPH Mechanical shines.

"Communication," Says Gord. "It is all about communication. In the tight building spaces that we need to occupy, several other trades are trying to fit in their parts too - primarily electrical, plumbing and gas."

In a situation like Gord found himself with the Oasis Project, communication and teamwork are the keys to this project’s success.

"Changes required in the already-constructed Phase One of the project meant stepping into a really challenging dynamic for any company to work in," Gord tells us. "But that's where we shine; finding solutions and creating workarounds." In the end, Gord is proud of the challenges they overcame. "Today, looking at the final product, you would never know that those challenges existed for us."

The Oasis project in Summerland, BC has brought Gord and his team a great sense of accomplishment for another reason. It is not just a construction project they are working on but a micro-community existing within the stomping grounds of GPH Mechanical's home base. Being part of the community has been important to Gord since the inception of GPH Mechanical. The company website tells you more, from the bursaries they support to community charities they are involved with. Building new homes is another way that Gord can see Summerland grow and prosper, too.

Embracing Any Project: Single Home to Multi-Home

"Densification is a great way to build a strong community and a way forward for our region," Gord comments. "These are not just 'buildings' we are working on. These are people's homes, spaces that over 30 families can now occupy - where there might have been only one or two families before."

A testament to Gord's vision can be seen by looking at all that GPH Mechanical has accomplished. At the same time as they were buttoning up the multi-faceted Oasis project, Gord and his team have also completed the HVAC for a single-family detached home and an eight-unit townhouse construction. True to their mission statement, Gord and his team are doing far more than HVAC work. They are building community—from small to large, stand-alone to strata.
