Kelowna-Lake Country-Coldstream MLA Tara Armstrong tabled a bill restricting transgender youth and it was voted down in the legislature today.

Armstrong is the house leader for the newly formed OneBC party and she tabled a private member’s bill called the “Protecting Minors from Gender Transition Act” in the Legislative Assembly, Oct. 8.

The motion for a first reading of the bill was voted down, 48 to 45.

Following the vote, Burnaby East MLA Rohini Arora alleged that Armstrong threatened her, but the threat wasn’t heard so it has to be dealt with later.

The bill was aimed at transgender youth, determining what they are allowed to do in school and what healthcare they receive, all with support from public funds.

It would have prevented schools from using preferred pronouns and trans students from using their preferred washroom. It would have also prevented gender affirming medical care for trans youth under the age of 19.

OneBC also organized a presentation by Chris Elston, an activist against trans rights for youth.

Armstrong’s tenure in politics has been mired in controversy including her efforts to undermine First Nations rights, an online petition attempting to recall her and the fact that she quit the BC Conservatives to start a new party which earned her a significant pay raise.
