Your ultimate guide to craft beer in Kamloops

KAMLOOPS - Over the past decade, craft beer has made its mark across B.C. and now two new brewpubs in Kamloops are adding to the growing list.

The two new craft breweries will add to the existing three brewpubs and two taphouses in Kamloops. Carmen Ruiz with Tourism Kamloops says Alchemy Brewing Company will open in downtown Kamloops this fall, while Bright Eye Brewing is expected to find its home on the North Shore by next spring.

Alchemy Brewing was given the green light to set up shop by Kamloops City Council Tuesday, July 17, and they have an expected opening of September or October. Ruiz says it will be the fourth newest brewery in Kamloops and it will be located in the Thompson Hotel just a few metres from the Noble Pig.

Bright Eye Brewing will also be joining the craft scene but will be setting up on the North Shore. Ruiz says the new brewpub is expected to open in Spring 2019, with a focus on "quality, community and fun." It'll be locaed in The Station on Tranquille, a new 47-unit development with a mixture of commercial and residential space at 280 Tranquille Rd.

There's been plenty of chatter and excitement on social media over the two new breweries coming to town, but the three existing ones in the city are still favourites.

The Noble Pig in downtown Kamloops was the first craft brewery in the city, setting up shop along Victoria Street. The pub offers a "made from scratch" kitchen, which means everything possible is made in house. A selection of five to 10 brews created on site are always on tap, plus a rotation of seasonal and specialty beers. You can take a tour of the brewery, have a tasting or attend a beer and food pairing night.

Partner and co-owner of the Noble Pig, Maeghan Summers, told iNFOnews.ca earlier this year that she and her husband will be opening a new whisky bar this summer on 5 Avenue and Lansdowne Street.

Red Collar Brewing on Lansdowne Street is especially bustling with activities, entertainment, and of course, beer during the summer months. The brewery offers a patio, board games and even open mic nights. You won't find any TVs at Red Collar — the space caters to those who want to enjoy conversation, make new friends, and eat and drink locally.

The company brews at least 25 different beers each year, and bottles as much as it can. The brewpub also hosts "backyard barbecues" during the summer, where you can grab a cold one and a bite to eat while enjoying the summer weather.

Iron Road Brewing, on Camosun Crescent, is one of the newest brewpubs in the city just a short journey away from Thompson Rivers University. The railroad-inspired taproom seats 60 people, and you can watch the brewing process take place up close and personal, Ruiz says.

The food menu at Iron Road is perfect for those who want a snack while they sip on local flavours. Two geologists got together and sparked the idea for Iron Road, and they brought in a master brewer to help out.

That's it for mostly-local craft beer in the city, but there are also a pair of tap houses that are home to craft beers from B.C. and around the world.

Frick and Frack Taphouse is located in downtown Kamloops, and its extensive drink menu is complemented by plenty of pub food choices. Plenty of patio space is available during the summer months.

Red Beard Cafe on Kamloops's North Shore serves beer and cider from around the province from 13 rotating taps, and if you want to grab a cold one with your furry friend, dogs are welcome on this patio.

We've put together an interactive map so you can find the brewpub or tap house you're looking for. Yellow beer icons indicate a tap house, blue icons show established brewpubs, and red icons show where the two new craft breweries will be located.
