KAMLOOPS - A new microbrewery plans to join the city's downtown business community in September.

Kamloops city council has approved the initial review of a liquor license application for Alchemy Brewing Company. The brewpub plans to open at 650 Victoria St. sometime in September.

The company's owner Al Renner says they still have the final review to go through in August with Kamloops city council, but they are hopeful once everything is approved by the city and the B.C. Liquor and Cannabis Regulation Branch, they are hoping to launch the new pub shortly after the summer.

"We are hoping within three months we can be up and running," Renner says.

The brewpub will be replacing a previous restaurant at the Thompson Hotel and Conference Centre. In a report prepared for city council, the pub will allow a maximum of 83 persons indoor and 25 persons outdoor.

"It's going to be a really relaxed atmosphere," Renner says, adding that it will be a family-friendly restaurant.

Renner says he got into craft beer nearly a decade ago with a couple friends.

"My own brews kept getting better and better, and I eventually started building a business plan," he says.

Renner says he is looking forward to joining other Kamloops craft breweries including Red Collar Brewing, Iron Road Brewing and The Noble Pig.

The recommendation was moved unanimously by councillors.
