The Regional District of North Okanagan is asking the public for their opinion on the development plan for the Coldstream Ranchlands.

The district acquired 126.5 hectares of land in 2021 to create a passive recreation area that goes in line with ecosystem conservation guidelines and hopes to get citizen’s opinions on the development plan through a survey, according to a regional district release.

The current plan for the area includes a 6.9 kilometre looping trail designed to avoid sensitive sites, garbage receptacles and dog waste bags, connections to trail networks and plans for restoring or decommissioning existing trails. The goal is to improve recreational opportunities hand in hand with the environment and adhere to the Greater Vernon Trails and Natural Spaces Master Plan.

“The Coldstream Ranchlands offer picturesque viewpoints and a unique natural environment for the public to enjoy,” Andy Affleck with the regional district said in the release. “We want to ensure that the proposed development plan aligns with community interests, so we encourage everyone to share their thoughts through an online survey.”

The development plan has been designed to minimize the impact on the environment and maintain the values of the agricultural land reserve. The plan was created through thorough pre-planning efforts which included environmental and archeological assessments to ensure a balance between recreation and conservation.

For more information on the project and to take part in the survey visit the Coldstream Ranchlands page here. The survey closes on Oct. 23.
