West Virginia art contest winners announced, work on display

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - The winners of West Virginia's Almost Heaven inaugural Governor's Art Exhibition have been announced, and the exhibit will be on display at the Capitol until Aug. 9.

Best in show and first place in the middle school division went to Nathan Landers of Stonewall Jackson Middle School in Kanawha County.

Other first-place awards went to Maddie Barker of Frankford Elementary in Greenbrier County and Garrett Cantrell of Herbert Hoover High in Kanawha County. Winners received gift cards for art supplies.

The display will include 184 entries from 39 schools in 29 counties.

The exhibition called for postcard designs, with selected art to be used by the West Virginia Tourism Office to invite travellers to visit the state.

The state Department of Arts, Culture and History and Gov. Jim Justice announced the winners Friday.
