MINNEAPOLIS - Minnesota wrestling coach J Robinson has been placed on paid administrative leave by his new boss, pending conclusion of a university investigation into his handling of an alleged prescription drug ring run by team members.

Athletic director Mark Coyle made the announcement during the annual state caravan for Gophers sports. Coyle said he consulted with university President Eric Kaler and informed Robinson early Wednesday.

Campus police have been conducting a criminal investigation into a team member's disputed allegation that Robinson attempted to cover up the widespread sale and use of the anti-anxiety drug Xanax by his wrestlers. The university announced its own probe into the program Tuesday.

An attorney for Robinson has said his client informed superiors earlier this year of his suspicion wrestlers were using the drugs.
