Why Kamloops Fire Rescue might not respond to a fire that's outside city limits

KAMLOOPS — Last night Kamloops Fire Rescue received a report of a commercial structure fire near Shuswap Road — only to find it was neither a structure fire nor within city limits.

Platoon Captain Wade Lindoff says the call came in at about 7:40 p.m. last night, May 10.

He says when crews arrived they found that the fire actually involved multiple semi trucks, and was deemed to be outside of city limits so they did not attempt.

Kamloops Fire Rescue crews returned to the city, but Forestry and RCMP stayed on scene.

"Our first priority is to look after taxpayers of the city," Lindoff says. "If we commit resources outside the city, and then another incident were to occur within the city, then service to the taxpayer is compromised."

As it happened, Kamloops Fire Rescue did have to respond to a fire within city limits about half an hour later.

However Lindoff says that doesn't necessarily mean they won't respond to a fire outside city limits.

"There are cases where we will go outside city (limits), like if the fire is a danger to our properties," he says.

In the case of last night's vehicle fire on Shuswap Road the flames appeared to be localized. The surrounding area was gravel making it appear the fire had little chance of spreading beyond the scene.
