Wildfire near West Kelowna, B.C., jumps guard, prompts evacuation alert

WEST KELOWNA, B.C. - An evacuation alert has been issued for residents of an Okanagan subdivision after a wildfire jumped a fireguard early this morning.

Evacuation alerts cover residents of the Jenny Creek subdivision and those living along Blue Grouse Road, Browse Road and parts of Westside Road — all in the Wilson's Landing area of West Kelowna, on the west side of Okanagan Lake.

The fire has also closed a 14 kilometre section of Westside Road from Bear Creek Road to Browse Road.

Residents in the affected area are being urged to be ready to leave their homes on short notice and there's no word when Westside Road will re-open.

A small forest fire was sparked by lightning on Friday and crews declared the four hectare blaze contained by noon on Sunday.

It jumped the guards at about 3 a.m. this morning and there's no indication, yet, if the fire has grown significantly. (CKFR, CKQQ)
