Approximately 10,000 Greater Vernon water customers are under a precautionary water quality advisory following emergency repairs at a water treatment plant.
The water quality advisory is in effect until the samples show the water is safe to drink.
An emergency repair in Lavington caused extremely low flows at the Duteau Water Treatment Plant which impacted water treatment according to a Greater Vernon Water media release.
"While all of the water was treated with chlorine and clarification, the low flows resulted in some water in the system not receiving UV treatment," the release reads.
Crews repaired the failed air valve this morning, Jan. 17, and have begun filling the water main again.
Most Duteau customers were temporarily switched to the Kalamalka supply and will be returned to Duteau supply later today. For customers who were without water, service should return to normal early this afternoon, Great Vernon Water said.
"Approximately 500 residents were out of water," water distribution manager John Lord said. "Approximately 10,000 residents are under the advisory."
When the water supply is restored it is normal for customers to experience some turbidity. It is advised customers run cold water through bathtubs and other taps and appliances until the water runs clear.
If test sample results are good, the advisory is expected to be rescinded by the end of the week.
Until then, customers are advised to exercise caution when using water for consumption purposes. All customers, especially young children, elderly people and those with weakened immune systems may opt to boil their water for at least one minute when using water for drinking, brushing teeth, washing fruits and veggies to be eaten raw, preparing food, mixing with baby formula, or making beverages or ice.
Updates will be posted to the regional district's website here and to its Facebook page here.
