Vernon RCMP are appealing to the public in the hopes of finding the next of kin after a broken urn was found on a hiking trail.

According to a Vernon North Okanagan RCMP release, a member of the public found a bag containing cremated human remains and a broken urn on the BX Falls trail Oct. 15.

"At this time, it is unclear how the items ended up here, however, based on the location, and the manner in which they were found, police do not believe this was the intended resting place for the remains," Vernon RCMP Const. Chris Terleski said in the release.

"The container has deteriorated after being exposed to the elements, however, we are hoping the unique pattern printed on the lid, depicted in the photographed, will be recognized and someone will come forward."

The RCMP would like to return the remains to the rightful owner and is asking the public for their assistance.

Anyone with any information that might help should contact Const. Steven McCarthy at the Vernon RCMP detachment at 250-545-7171.
