Vernon home destroyed by fire as crews stopped blaze from spreading

A house in the 1200 block of 35 Avenue in Vernon was completely gutted by fire, Thursday, Sept. 26, 2019.

VERNON - Vernon firefighters managed to stop a fire that gutted a house on 35 Avenue yesterday from spreading to the neighbouring property.

According to a media release, Vernon Fire Rescue Services received the call just before 4 p.m. yesterday, Sept. 26, of a house fire at the 1200 block 35 Avenue across from Silver Star Elementary School.

"Upon arrival, crews found one house was fully involved and there was concern the fire could spread to the house next door," Fire Chief David Lind said in the release. "Between the two homes is a large tree, which caught fire but crews were able to suppress the fire to save the second home."

Luckily, crews managed to keep the flames from spreading to the second house which received light damage to the exterior including parts of the yard and roof.

No one was injured in the fire and a woman and two children were evacuated from the home.

A Gofundme page set-up for the victims of the fire had gained over $1,800 in the first 13 hours of it being set up. The page states a woman had lived in the house with her two children for five years.

There are reports two brothers lived in the basement suite of the home.

The fire is under investigation and no cause has been determined as yet.
