In preparation for its grand opening in Vernon this spring, FreshCo is holding a job fair and looking to employ new staff.

The supermarket, which will move into the old Safeway building in downtown Vernon once renovated, is holding the two-day event at the Schubert Centre March 13 and 14.

FreshCo advertises it is hiring "hourly positions in all departments" offering flexible work schedules with competitive wages and benefits, as well as paid training and free uniforms. The company also says it offers scholarship programs for college and university. Those wishing to apply must be 15-years-old or older.

In June 2019, Sobeys announced three Safeway stores in the Thompson-Okanagan would be closing and reopening as FreshCo stores. The downtown Safeway store, which opened its doors in 1965, closed in November 2019.

United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 1518 told iNFOnews.ca FreshCo workers earn considerably less than Safeway employees due to a different collective agreement.

No one from FreshCo was immediately available to confirm an opening date for the grocery store.

The FreshCo job fair takes place at the Schubert Centre, 3505 30 Avenue, Vernon, on March 13 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and March 14 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
