Downtown Vernon Safeway closes its doors for good

As the clock struck 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23, the core of downtown Vernon was forever changed.

Safeway, which opened its door to customers 54 years ago, closed for the final time. Kelowna's Dilworth Safeway and Kamloops' Sahali store also closed their doors Saturday.

While the iconic downtown grocery store is no more, the space will be converted into a FreshCo grocery store. Marketed as Sobeys Incorporated's discount banner, FreshCo will open spring 2020.

“Customer response to our first five FreshCo locations in B.C. and Manitoba has been overwhelmingly positive,” Mike Venton, General Manager, Discount, said in a news release. “Discount is the fastest-growing retail segment and we’re now participating in a meaningful way in Western Canada, providing customers with more choice and market-leading low prices”

FreshCo launched in 2010 and is committed to “provide the best discount grocery shopping experience by offering quality fresh food at low prices and with less compromise.”
