VANCOUVER - Vancouver City council has passed a plan that would mean far fewer vehicles in the city and could see at least two-thirds of trips into town made by foot, bike or transit by the year 2040.
Mayor Gregor Robertson says that would boost the economy and move Vancouver towards its so-called greenest city targets.
About 44 per cent of the population already walks, bikes or uses transit to get around the city.
The plan puts a big emphasis on expanded transit, would mean safety upgrades for both pedestrians and cyclists and boosts the movement of goods to support local businesses by maintaining designated truck routes and providing access to the port and airport, for example.
The idea was in the consultation stage for two years and more than 18,000 residents provided input.
Robertson says the plan represents a major step towards the city's transportation future and supports the needs of a growing economy and greener city.
