Vaccination rates at TRU are higher than the rest of Kamloops

Thompson Rivers University

The rate of fully vaccinated individuals on the university campus in Kamloops is nearly 10% higher than that of the rest of the city.

Thompson Rivers University surveyed students and faculty to disclose their COVID-19 vaccination status and found that at least 85% of students are fully vaccinated, compared to 77% among the local health area.

Roughly 83% of the student body, and 90% of faculty, responded to the survey, in the university's efforts to gather data to help them determine what health measures are necessary in the future.

Among the student body who responded, 10% of them are partially vaccinated, 2% have not received one dose and 3% said they preferred not to answer.

According to the results released on Sept. 23, 94% of faculty who responded are fully vaccinated, 2% have received one dose and just 1% are not vaccinated. Among those respondents, 3% said they'd prefer not to disclose.

iNFOnews.ca reached out to both UBC Okanagan and Okanagan College, but they did not respond in time for publication.

Compared to the rest of the Interior Health region, Kamloops has one of the higher vaccination rates with 77% of people over 12 having both doses and 85% with at least their first dose, according to the B.C. Centre for Disease Control's most recent data on Sept. 21.

The Central Okanagan closely follows with a 77% vaccination rate on second doses and 84% with at least one.

On Sept. 21, the Interior Health region had reached 87% vaccination rate for people over 12 that have received at least one dose. However, local health areas can vary widely.

Generally, larger centres have higher vaccination rates in the region.

There are, however, smaller communities with some of the highest vaccination rates in the region, like Revelstoke, Trail and Golden.

Revelstoke tops the list of local health areas with an 81% vaccination rate for second doses, while Enderby remains at the lowest spot with just 59%.

Thompson Rivers University expects those who are not fully vaccinated to submit to regular rapid testing, in order to avoid COVID-19 transmission. Students are not required to use their vaccination cards to enter, but rapid tests are offered on campus.
