LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Shonda Rhimes says she didn't have to break through the glass ceiling to become a top TV show-runner because scores of smart, creative women paved the way.

The creator of "Scandal," ''Grey's Anatomy" and "How to Get Away With Murder" thanked her female predecessors as she accepted the Sherry Lansing Leadership Award on Wednesday at the Hollywood Reporter's annual Women in Entertainment breakfast.

Rhimes said she followed a path to success "created by other women's footprints" and called the recognition "a group effort."

"Scandal" star Tony Goldwyn said Rhimes helped "redefine the TV landscape" as he presented the award at Milk Studios in Los Angeles. Michelle Obama lauded Rhimes via video.

The 23rd annual breakfast event also featured a tribute to Joan Rivers by daughter Melissa Rivers and Sarah Silverman.
