New York Times Co. picks BBC director-general Mark Thompson as next CEO

NEW YORK, N.Y. - The New York Times Co. has named BBC Director-General Mark Thompson as its president and CEO.

In Tuesday's announcement, Times Chairman Arthur Sulzberger Jr. called Thompson a "gifted executive" who helped the BBC extend its brand into digital products and services.

The Times Co., faced with declining ad revenue from its printed editions, has been trying to boost revenue from digital products. Last year, it began charging for online access to The New York Times and The Boston Globe newspapers.

Thompson replaces Janet Robinson, who resigned as CEO in December. Thompson, 55, will begin in November. He'll also join the board of directors.

The appointment follows the company's move to add technology heavyweights Joichi Ito and Brian McAndrews to its board in June.
