A two-year-old child was struck and killed by a vehicle off Highway 97 near Falkland yesterday afternoon.

Officers were called to assist paramedics at the site of the collision at around 4:25 p.m. yesterday, Jan. 29, according to an RCMP media release.

The child had been struck by a vehicle on a rural property and was critically injured. They were transported to hospital but did not survive.

"No words can describe how absolutely devastating this is for the family and our hearts go out to them and everyone affected by this tragedy," Vernon North Okanagan RCMP Const. Chris Terleski said in the release.

Police are investigating the incident and don't suspect criminality.

The BC Coroners Service is also conducting their own concurrent, fact-finding investigation.

Both agencies said they do not have additional details for release at this time.
