A head-on crash between a semi and a passenger vehicle killed two people and has closed Highway 5 north of Barriere today.
RCMP say at approximately 12:10 p.m. today, Feb. 5, police and paramedics responded to a crash in the Darfield area of Highway 5, north of Barriere.
When crews arrived on the scene, they found a passenger vehicle and a transport truck had collided head-on, leaving the two occupants in the passenger vehicle dead, according to an RCMP media release.
"The investigation into the cause of this collision is in its early stages and nothing has been ruled out, however road and weather conditions are being considered as a possible contributing factor due to recent snowfall in the area," Cpl. Mike Halskov with BC RCMP Traffic Services says in the release.
Highway 5 is closed in both directions while investigators are on the scene. Check DriveBC.ca for updates.
"Drivers are reminded that road and weather conditions can change quickly at this time of year, especially on Interior highways and mountain passes," Halskov says. "Please reduce speeds and drive according to road and weather conditions and consider delaying your travel plans until conditions improve."
