KAMLOOPS - Despite the number of police officers out checking for impaired drivers over the holidays, some people didn't seem to get the message in Kamloops.

Kamloops RCMP Sgt. Darren Michels says in a news release general duty and traffic members conducted road checks over the holidays to make sure roads in the city were safe.

During the month of December, thousands of vehicles were checked at different locations in the city, which resulted in 24 impaired drivers being taken off the road, Michels says.

Nine 90-day immediate roadside suspensions were handed out, along with six three-day prohibitions, six 24-hour suspensions, one seven-day prohibition, and two 12-hour suspensions.

Michels says these checks resulted in several other criminal code violations being discovered, including nine drug seizures, a person with a warrant and two seized firearms.

"The consequences of impaired driving are massive and the Kamloops RCMP remains committed to reducing these tragedies," he says.
