KELOWNA - You may be just getting over the sting of paying your annual property taxes earlier this month but when the tax is measured in millions, the sting lasts just a little longer.
The top ten corporate property tax bills total over $12 million, about five per cent of the city's total property tax income in 2017.
To no real surprise it's a shopping mall, Orchard Park Mall, that heads the list, paying $4,102,616 in property taxes last year for its prime highway location.
Property taxes are related to real estate value and Orchard Park’s position as the prime retail location in the city means it's worth a lot money.
There’s a big gap before the next on the list, Fortis B.C., which paid $1,488,238 tax on its Kelowna holdings, followed by The Delta Grand hotel ($1,286,767), Inland Natural Gas, ($1,027,715) and McIntosh Properties which paid the city $1,014,825 for an unidentifed shopping mall.
(The city provided legal names and amounts but not civic addresses, although some are easy to guess.)
The rest of the top ten were also shopping malls: Victor Projects ($766,317), 4231 Investments ($728,302), Dilworth Shopping Centre ($651,602), RG Properties ($648,657) and Walmart Canada Corp. ($642,639).
