Thriller being shot in Kamloops part of growing local film industry

A local production crew poses for a photo on the set for a movie called "A Private Affair" in Kamloops, July 12, 2022.

All hands were on deck at a busy movie production site in Kamloops today, July 12.

The film location at a heritage home in the city is one of several sites being used for a movie called A Private Affair. This will be the sixth movie produced in Kamloops in just over a year by Cjay Boisclair of Askem Productions and co-producer Jeremy Kulyk of Kulyk Industries.

“I can’t give away anything about the plot but I can say it is a thriller and is spicier than what we have done before,” Boisclair said.

Every new movie produced is drawing a larger crew of local talents, providing more training in all areas of film production and forging broader connections within the community.

Boisclair’s long-term goal is to form a film centre and school in the Tournament Capital.

“As we go we are training people and bringing more people up to train,” she said. “We started a non-profit called YKA Film and we are using that to train people up and help get the City of Kamloops involved so we can be more of a filming centre where people can train and go off and get other jobs.”

Boisclair said her goal is to have a school that is also a studio and bring people in from Vancouver to film for cheap in exchange for using the students training there. This would enable them to get their first credits which is a hard thing to do in the industry.

She said it is cheaper to shoot in Kamloops than it is in Vancouver, an obvious draw for producers from the Lower Mainland.

The crew is currently made up of 85% of those local to the area. The producers use local security companies, hotels, cleaners, caterers, first aid teams and eateries.

“We support our businesses as much as possible,” Boisclair said. “We do have to get gear from Vancouver because it isn’t available here which is another thing we want to bring to a future film centre."

A Private Affair is being shot at various locations including the Commodore, Blue Grotto, Venture Kamloops, six private homes and a boxing gym located under the Blue Grotto.

Boisclair credits her ongoing success to her hard working crew and co-producer. She said the City of Kamloops has been a huge help.

“Sarah Candido from the external relations department is the liaison between the city and the residents of our neighbourhoods and the businesses we work around," she said. "She is phenomenal and we could not succeed without her.

“The heads of our departments are also incredible working closely with their crews and lifting them up. We are a film family.”

A Private Affair is filming until July 20 and will be airing sometime next year.
