A B.C. psychiatric nurse has been banned from practicing for 10 years after she admitted to having a relationship with a vulnerable client.
According to a July 11 British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives decision, Chilliwack-based registered psychiatric nurse Shannon Van Tongeren had a "romantic and physical relationship" between August and September 2021.
The college described Van Tongeren's behaviour as "egregious."
According to the decision, Van Tongeren had a professional and therapeutic nurse-client relationship with the vulnerable adult and breached professional practice standards by entering into the relationship.
The college says she acted in an unethical manner by continuing to contact the client after being directed to have no further contact with them.
The psychiatric nurse also admitted to breaching privacy standards by accessing the client's medical health records.
Van Tongeren signed a consent agreement admitting to the relationship and agreed to a 10-year ban on practicing.
No other details are given in the college's decision.
