Time to dust off your clubs and pull your golf shoes out of storage because some Thompson-Okanagan courses are ready for you.
From Kamloops to Oliver, the general consensus is that the mild winter has left greens in great condition, and the only restriction now is daylight.
“We opened yesterday (March 4) and it was busy. It was like half of Kamloops was here,” Brian Wornstaff with Mount Paul Golf Course said.
In Kamloops, The Dunes and Rivershore Golf Links are also open, with Kamloops Golf and Country Club planning for a March 12 opening and Tobiano Golf Course on April 2.
Kate Weir, the head golf professional at Rivershore, said 170 golfers came out for a round yesterday.
“We’ve had a crazy interest in membership this year, we’re going to have the most in a long time, if not ever," Weir said.
She said before last season, they would expect to see somewhere around 350 memberships at the course, but last year they had 440 members. She expects they’ll surpass that in 2021.
In Kelowna, Michaelbrook Golf Club and Two Eagles Golf Course are open, while Kelowna Springs Golf Club is prepared to offer tee times on March 6.
Shadow Ridge Golf Club, Shannon Lake Golf Course and Okanagan Golf Club are expected to open before the end of March, Chris Shauf, spokesperson for Tourism Kelowna, said. The rest of the Kelowna courses are planning for early April.
Vernon's Predator Ridge is also planning to have the greens ready on April 6. Vernon Golf and Country Club, Hillview Golf Course and Spallumcheen Golf and Country Club are yet to determine opening days, but they expect it to become clearer within the next couple of weeks.
In the South Okanagan, Skaha Meadows Golf Course and Penticton Golf and Country Club are open and booking tee times. Oliver courses, Nk'Mip Canyon Desert Golf Course and Fairview Mountain Golf Club are opening March 10 and 11, respectively.
Early season conditions can be wet in some places as frost melts away, but these courses have had a relatively mild winter. They are booking tee times already, so it's recommended golfers call ahead if they plan to get in some rounds of spring golf.
