KAMLOOPS - Downtown businesses and Saturday shoppers will be pleased with a Kamloops city council decision.
Free parking was approved today, Nov. 22, for the first, four Saturdays of December. Council gave the thumbs up to the request from the Kamloops Central Business Improvement Association to have free street parking on Dec. 3, 10, 17 and 24.
The decision means council will be out $10,000 in potential revenue. City corporate services director David Duckworth told council the city is in a good position when it comes to parking revenue.
In a letter to council, the Business Improvement Association’s manager Gay Pooler asked for the free parking as a way to draw customers into the city’s core during the busy Christmas shopping season.
“This idea is a popular public relations tool utilized in other cities found to be appreciated by downtown patrons,” she says in the letter.
