A BC nurse has been suspended for one month for swiping narcotics from work.

According to a June 8 BC College of Nurses and Midwives decision, the unnamed registered nurse pilfered the drugs over a period of six months in 2020.

The regulator says the nurse failed to document narcotics medication administration and narcotic waste and diverted drugs to use while on duty on two occasions.

The nurse is the tenth so far this year in BC to be reprimanded for taking narcotics from work.

The decision says the nurse was diagnosed and admitted to a disability by abusing narcotics. They have agreed to the treatment recommendations.

The registered nurse agreed to a one-month suspension followed by terms and conditions some of which will be in place for three years.

The nurse will be restricted from handling, dispensing, administering, or wasting narcotics, benzodiazepines, controlled substances, and the "zed" class of drugs for one year, followed by direct supervision for the second year of practice.

They will also be monitored and have to disclose treatment for three years. There will be limitations imposed on working in the emergency department, interventional radiology, ICU, CCU, CVU, PAR, labour and delivery, or pediatrics for two years, and they are barred from doing nights or being the only nurse on duty for six months.

The regulator says it is satisfied that the terms will protect the public.
