Suspect arrested in pair of suspicious Kelowna blazes

A suspect has been arrested in connection to a pair of Kelowna structure fires in mid February.

Emergency crews responded to a pair of large structure fires near Springfield Road and Dayton Street between 4 a.m. and 4:30 a.m. on Sunday Feb. 16.

The suspicious fires were lit within 30 minutes of each other, according to an RCMP media release.

Investigators gathered several pieces of evidence and worked with people in the community including neighbouring businesses to identify a suspect.

Police identified a suspect, and arrested the 40-year-old man, March 6, on unrelated matters.

The suspect is still in custody and police have forwarded the case to the BC Prosecution Service for charge assessment. RCMP don't say what charges have been recommended.

“This incident was met with an excellent response by our frontline members, who took immediate investigational steps that allowed the Crime Reduction Unit to advance the case,” Sgt. Scott Powrie said in the release. “A great deal of work went into this investigation, with extensive utilization of CCTV footage throughout the neighbourhood, enabling investigators to link key pieces of evidence. We would like to thank the neighbouring businesses who shared their surveillance video as it was instrumental in the identification of the suspect.”
