For students who rely on private transportation at UBCO in Kelowna, they’re paying an extra $588 to $756 to park on campus for the school year.
Those rates are not considered reasonable to over 1,600 people who signed a petition on change.org titled Make Parking on UBCO Campus Affordable - What the Park are these Fees?
“We are asking for a restructuring of parking fees that will sit in place until Kelowna public transit access improves on our campus, a reduction in parking ticket fees from $30 in first 14 days to $20 no matter the timeline, a reduction in day rate parking in the upper campus lots, and an increase in the UPass subsidy without an increase in overall parking fees,” the petition says.
The UBCO’s webpage for student parking says that parking is in extremely high demand and permits are sold through a waitlist system.
According to the UBC webpage on parking, the price and availability of parking on campus is regulated “in order to influence individuals’ decisions to drive or take alternative modes of transportation.”
