VERNON -  Mounties are looking for witnesses to help them figure out a bizarre series of events overnight that could have been straight out of a mystery crime show.

At about 1 a.m. Aug. 21, an officer was called to investigate a reported accident in the 3700 block of Welker Road in Vernon. The caller told police a small vehicle crashed and came to rest in the ditch behind his house and two males were on his property looking into one of his cars.

While the officer was en route and less than a block from the scene another car came at him at a high rate of speed and avoided his effort to pull them over by veering around him and into a shallow ditch. He reports two females were inside the vehicle. The car pulled out of the ditch and took off. He was unable to get a plate number.

The officer proceeded to the caller's home and was told to check out the shed behind the house. When he heard two males rummaging around he announced his presence and the two ran away. The constable chased them for a short distance then called for an RCMP canine team to assist.

The dog team tracked along East Vernon Road but lost the scent near Boldoc Road. While they didn't get their suspect, they did happen upon a red Ford Mustang with the driver's door open and a tampered ignition switch. It was sitting in the driveway of a residence off BX Road.

The crashed car that prompted the investigation was a 1995 Honda Del Sol and was towed for closer examination by RCMP. They determined it was stolen earlier in the evening from the owner's driveway on 20 Street in Vernon.

Anyone with information about the strange activity that happened overnight is asked to call Vernon RCMP at 250-545-7171.
