Spring snow headed for Southern Interior mountain passes this weekend

You'll need winter tires if you plan to hit the road for points west or east this weekend, as the weather office warns of spring snow on upper elevation highways this weekend

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement as spring snow is expected tomorrow, April 13, in many Southern Interior mountain passes.

Forecasters say a Pacific frontal system will move across B.C. tomorrow dumping up to 15 centimetres of snow as the snow levels drop to 800 metres before gradually rising to 1200 m by the afternoon.

Around 10 to 15 cm of snow is expected near the Coquihalla Summit on Highway 5 and the Kootenay Pass on Highway 3 by the afternoon, with another five to 10 cm potentially coming down in the evening in the form of flurries.

Environment Canada says snowfall is expected to be less intense on some southern highway passes, only collecting an estimated five cm of snow.

Several highways will be affected by the snowfall, including the Hope to Merritt and Merritt to Kamloops sections on the Coquihalla Highway, Merritt to Kelowna on the Okanagan Connector, Eagle Pass to Rogers Pass on the Trans-Canada Highway, and Hope to Princeton via Allison Pass and Paulson Summit to Kootenay Pass on Highway 3.

For the latest on the special weather statement check out Environment Canada's website here.

You can find the latest highway condition at the Drive B.C. website here.
