South Perimeter Road going ahead in Kelowna

KELOWNA – Accelerated construction of South Perimeter Road and a extension on Gordon Drive will go ahead after less than one per cent of voters disapproved the project.

The arterial road was moved up the transportation list at the request of a developer, and Kelowna councillors wasted little time debating the proposal last month, sending it to the alternative approval process.

The $10.8 million South Perimeter Road project stretches from the end of Gordon Drive to Stewart Road.

Real estate services manager John Saufferer has said the deal accomplishes a number of goals including a reduction in traffic congestion on Gordon and Lakeshore Roads, options for commercial development in the area and better egress for the suburban neighbourhoods in south Kelowna.

Developer Ponds Ventures Inc. will construct the road at its own cost and will be paid back by the city as it collects development cost charges in the area, according to a City of Kelowna media release. There is no interest required nor is there a time limit on the payback, although Saufferer said the current pace of development would mean repayment within eight years.

Only 120 electors - about 0.62 per cent - opposed the project, falling well short of the ten per cent or 10,909 required by the process, the city says.

City council will receive the authorization bylaw for adoption at its meeting on March 26.
