A BC nurse has been barred from nursing for five years for having an "emotionally intimate relationship" with a vulnerable patient.

According to a July 27 BC College of Nurses and Midwives decision, registered nurse Sherri Hedberg allowed the patient to stay overnight at her home and cooked him meals.

On some occasions, the nurse allowed one of her patient's family members to also stay over at her home.

"Hedberg engaged in and maintained an emotionally intimate relationship with a vulnerable client who was part of her caseload," the regulator said in the decision.

Hedberg is from Langley, but the decision doesn't say where she was working when the relationship took place between September 2022 and April 2023.

The regulator is vague on details only calling it an "emotionally intimate relationship" and "other inappropriate physical contact."

The regulator is scant on details and doesn't say why the nurse allowed the client to stay overnight at her home.

"BC College of Nurses and Midwives considered that breaches of professional boundaries in the nurse-client relationship where nurses engage in inappropriate relationships with clients in their care is professional misconduct, and conduct that harms patients and erodes trust in the profession," the decision says.

Hedberg signed a consent agreement admitting to her conduct.

The nursing regulator stripped Hedberg of her licence and prohibited her from reapplying for five years.

If she does reapply after 2029 the nurse will have to prove to the regulator that she meets the requirements of "fitness, competence, and good character."

The College says it is satisfied that the terms will protect the public.
