PENTICTON - The weather is warming up, blossoms are blooming, and jackets are being hung up in place of short sleeves.
It’s spring — which also means it’s garage sale time.
If you are new to the garage sale scene in Penticton and the South Okanagan, you won’t want to miss one of the premier garage sale events of the year taking place this weekend at the Kaleden firehall.
This year’s sale takes place this Saturday, May 2, starting at 8 a.m. sharp at the Kaleden firehall, 303 Lakehill Road.
The Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department has been staging an annual garage sale since 1975, according to Chief Darlene Bailey.
The event has grown a lot since that first sale, which took place out of the back of a pick up truck. This year’s sale items fill the firehall’s four service bays and spill out into the parking lot.
The sale survives due to the generosity of Kaleden residents and annual dedication of Kaleden firefighters who make innumerable pickups of donated items in the weeks prior to the sale. Funds raised in the sale are used to purchase equipment at the firehall.
Expect to find some excellent deals on furniture, lawn and garden equipment, sporting goods, books and housewares. There’s even a fooseball table in this year’s mix.
People now come from all over the valley, lining up in front of the firehall in time for the 8 a.m. siren. Those initial participants seldom come away empty handed — there is something for everyone, even for those who aren't looking for anything.
