The provincial courthouse in Golden was set on fire, and police believe it was intentional.

The Golden RCMP responded to multiple alarms that were triggered at 3:25 a.m., according to a media release from the RCMP Southeast District.

Officers arrived to find the building on fire.

Members of the Golden Fire Department arrived shortly after. Firefighters battled the fire for several hours, and the area is still cordoned off while crews continue their efforts to contain it.

One firefighter was injured while tackling the flames and taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. There did not appear to be anybody inside the building at the time, or any other injuries reported.

“Early observations point to it as being a purposeful arson,” the release says.

The site will remained cordoned off as investigators examine the scene. More information is expected to be released after investigators can enter the building safely.

Anybody who can help with the investigation is asked to call the Golden RCMP at 250-344-2221.
