Smoky skies expected until midweek in the Okanagan

The Okanagan was cloaked in smoke yesterday, Sept. 13, 2020, as this photo of the sun taken at noon indicates. Environment Canada says to expect more of the same until Tuesday night in the valley.

It may be a couple of days before Okanagan residents can expect any relief from the oppressive smoke spreading into the region from American wildfires.

Environment Canada says the mix of sun and cloud today, Sept. 14, should be obscured by widespread smoke expected to continue overnight. A special air quality statement has been issued.

Winds are expected to be northwest at 20 km/h in the afternoon with a high of 23 Celsius and a low of 14 C in Vernon and Kelowna, 22 C and 15 C in Penticton.

A mix of sun and cloud is expected Tuesday, but again with widespread smoke, which is expected to linger overnight. Tuesday’s high should reach 24 C in Vernon and Kelowna, 23 C in Penticton, with a low to 11 C.

Indications are the smoke should clear for Wednesday with sunny skies, a high of 25 C and a low of 10 C.

More sun is in store for Thursday with a high of 27 C and a low of 13 C.

There are a few more clouds in Friday’s forecast with a sun and cloud mix, a high of 24 C and a low of 13 C expected.

Cloudy skies are anticipated Saturday along with a high of 21 C, a low of 12 C and a 60 per cent chance of showers Saturday night.

A mix of sun and cloud is in store for Sunday with a high of 20 C.

Normal temperatures at this time of year in the Okanagan are highs of  20 C and lows of 7 C.
