KELOWNA – The driver of a Jeep may have fallen asleep behind the wheel before causing a three-vehicle crash in Kelowna yesterday afternoon.

Kelowna RCMP say the collision happened on Highway 33 near Daves Road in Joe Rich at approximately 1:42 p.m. yesterday, Nov. 23.

The driver of a westbound Jeep Liberty failed to keep right, crossed the centre line and hit an eastbound Toyota Tacoma pickup truck, which spun out of control, according to an RCMP media release. The driver of an eastbound Chevrolet Equinox couldn’t stop in time and hit the spinning pickup.

“The driver of the Jeep Liberty, a 31-year-old Kelowna man who police believe may have fallen asleep behind the wheel, was charged under the B.C. Motor Vehicle Act,” Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey in the release.

He was taken to hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

The 34-year-old Kelowna woman driving the Equinox was also taken to hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

The 33-year-old Kelowna man behind the wheel of the pickup and his three passengers were treated at the scene by paramedics.

“The outcome of this crash could have been much worse, had the driver of the Toyota Tacoma not taken evasive action to avoid a head-on collision at highway speeds,” O’Donaghey says.

If you witnessed this crash and have not yet spoken to police you are asked to contact the Kelowna RCMP at 250-762-3300.
