Central Okanagan Search and Resuce volunteers have fallen victim to crime after gear was stolen from a trailer last night, and the group says this isn't the first time.

A search and rescue group run by volunteers has fallen victim to crime in the central Okanagan last night, Sept. 2.

An oxygen tank and trauma pack, flare packs, two radios, and some LED lights were stolen from the gear trailer owned by Central Okanagan Search and Rescue at their hall on Old Vernon Road near the Kelowna airport.

“We were in the process of finishing the outfitting of the trailer in preparation for taking it to a secure, fenced location in West Kelowna when we discovered the break-in," president Brad Trites said in a media release. "The gear can be replaced, but it is really disheartening to the 51 members who volunteer their time and energy to serve the public. It’s a slap in the face."

A late-model Toyota Tacoma with silver running boards could be seen on security footage driving behind the hall.

The group said this is not the first time it has been targeted by thieves.

The regional district the search and rescue group last year to prepare a building needs report regarding the hall on Old Vernon Road, which they will present to the district on Sept. 9.
