Rescued wildlife to benefit from new Okanagan rehab centre

Kelowna city council has given the green light to a new small animal rehabilitation centre. Located in the Hall Road area, it will focus on rehabilitating animals such as squirrels and song birds, council was told Tuesday, Nov. 16, 2022, by Wild Things Rehabilitation Society founder Sydney Platz.

Despite the objections of city staff, Kelowna city council has given the green light to a new small animal rehabilitation centre.

Located in the Hall Road area of Kelowna, it will focus on rehabilitating animals such as squirrels and song birds, council was told yesterday, Nov. 16, by Wild Things Rehabilitation Society founder Sydney Platz.

Until now, there was no facility in the B.C. Interior to treat injured or orphaned wildlife. The animals are are often taken to local vet clinics where they're euthanized due to a lack of resources, the society said on it's website.

The facility won’t be open to the public and will only house 20 animals at a time, Platz said. They'll be returned to the area where they were found once they have been rehabilitated.

The animals will have to be checked by veterinarians before going to the centre to make sure they are suitable for the centre and don’t carry diseases.

City staff recommended against the project because animal clinics need to be on at least two hectares of land and Wild Thing's parcel at 2605 O’Reilly Rd. is only 1.31 ha and in an environmentally sensitive area.

Council voted 5-2 in favour of the project.
