Police spotted a stolen vehicle while patrolling in downtown Penticton, and in the driver’s seat was a repeat offender.

Derek Thomas Johnson, 36, of Penticton was arrest on July 22, according to an RCMP media release.

Johnson was first spotted in the stolen automobile by members of Penticton’s Street Enforcement Unit, and they were supported by Kelowna’s Target Enforcement Unit, and safely arrested Johnson, RCMP said. Police found a large enough quantity of illicit drugs during a search and say it was enough to indicate he was trafficking.

“This was a great collaborative effort between Penticton and Kelowna RCMP to ensure that a repeat offender was successfully arrested without causing any further potential risk to the general public,” Cpl. Brent Huff of Penticton RCMP’s Street Enforcement Unit said in the release.

“The owner of this stolen vehicle was very pleased to learn of this recovery and acknowledged the efforts of the local police.”

RCMP said Johnson is due in court today, Sept. 29. His charges include possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000 and possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking.
