RCMP officer shot and killed a suspect in Penticton

The B.C. civilian police watchdog is investigating an incident where an RCMP officer shot and killed a man in Penticton.

Police received reports that a man was acting erratically and waving a knife on Government Street near Penticton Regional Hospital around 3:15 p.m. on Oct. 22, according to press releases from RCMP and the Independent Investigations Office.

When police officers arrived they tried to arrest the man. An officer was injured and shot the suspect.

The suspect was given first aid at the scene and taken to the hospital where he later died.

The officer was also taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. No one else was hurt.

BC RCMP reported the incident to the Independent Investigations Office.

The IIO is now investigating so police will not release any more details about the shooting.

The IIO is the Independent civilian oversight agency of the police in BC. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
