RCMP investigating sexual assaults against vulnerable women in Kamloops

Police in Kamloops are investigating a pair of sexual assaults involving "vulnerable women," and they're now looking for more victims.

Kamloops RCMP said the complaints came separately this summer through third-party reports. A news release issued today, Aug. 19, suggests they suspect the same person is responsible, but revealed little information about the circumstances.

“In both cases police are actively working to gather further evidence to advance the investigations and identify the person responsible,” Kamloops RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Dana Napier said in the news release.

“As the investigation progresses, police are concerned that other individuals may have had negative experiences with the perpetrator, or may have been victimized, but have not yet come forward.”

The two reports involve vulnerable women who may have been targeted for sexual assaults and police learned of them in July and August, respectively.

“In both these instances, women who tend to lead more vulnerable lifestyle appear to have been the intended targets of these attacks,” Cpl. Joe Bayda of the general investigations team said in the release. “We are committed to ensuring their safety and encouraging others who may have been affected to come forward.”

Where or when the assaults are believed to have happened isn't mentioned in the release.

Napier did not respond to follow-up questions when asked for more information and to explain what police mean by "vulnerable."
