Possible West Kelowna shooting leads to a dangerous chase

Shortly after a possible shooting was reported in West Kelowna last night Kelowna RCMP tried to stop a vehicle suspected of being involved.

An RCMP officer spotted a white SUV on the Bennett bridge shortly after 8:30 p.m. yesterday, Jan. 14. Thinking it matched the description of a vehicle in the other incident, the officer tried to pull it over but it sped off at a high rate of speed.

An officer at the north end of the bridge put out a spike belt but that failed to stop the SUV. Police called off the chase in the interest of public safety, a Kelowna RCMP news release said.

The vehicle was found abandoned on McKenzie Road. Despite calling in police dogs, the driver was not found.

“Our investigation later determined that this vehicle was not involved in the incident in West Kelowna, and all indications are that this driver was fleeing from police for other unknown and unrelated reasons,” Cpl. Jocelyn Noseworthy of the Kelowna RCMP said in the news release. “Regardless, the behaviour of this driver was extremely dangerous, and put everyone at risk. We are now treating this as a separate criminal investigation and are working to identify the driver.”

Anyone with information is asked to call the Kelowna RCMP at 250-762-3300, Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or by leaving a tip online at www.crimestoppers.net.
