Police watchdog concludes Kelowna RCMP not responsible for deaths in Peachland

Kelowna RCMP officers were found to be not responsible for the deaths of two people in an apparent murder-suicide in Peachland.

The incident began to unfold for police around 4:30 p.m. on June 27, when officers received a report that one person had been shot and another was planning to hurt themselves, according to the Independent Investigations Office's report issued today, Oct. 19.

Members of the Southeast District Emergency Response Team arrived to an address at Garraway Place, where they attempted to contact the occupants but were unable to.

When they entered the home around 6:20 p.m., two people were found dead.

One person had what appeared to be self-inflicted wounds and there was a weapon nearby, RCMP said at the time.

“The Chief Civilian Director has reviewed the evidence – including medical and forensic evidence – and determined that police are not responsible for the deaths,” the report reads.

Investigations being led by the Kelowna RCMP and B.C. Coroners Service continue.

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in B.C. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
